Installation

Chordious was written in C# and should run on any Windows machine that supports .NET 6.0: Windows 7 SP1+, 8.1, 10, and 11. It has been officially tested on Windows 10 and 11.

Not sure which version to install? Most modern PCs are x64 so try that first, otherwise the x86 version is provided for older computers.

Windows Setup MSI (Windows 7 SP1+ / 8.1 / 10)

Chordious is a desktop application and the standard way to use Chordious is to install it to your PC:

  1. Select the Windows MSI button for your PC’s architecture.
  2. Save the msi file to your PC.
  3. Run the msi file and follow the instructions.
  4. Run Chordious from your Start Menu.

Note: If a dialog pops up about the file not being safe, be sure to see Why do I get a security warning when trying to install Chordious?

It’s recommended that you keep the automatic updating enabled to be notified when new versions of Chordious are released. To update, simply run the newer msi.

Standard ZIP (Self-Contained, No Install)

If you’re unable to install Chordious to your PC, the standard zip release provides self-contained x86/x64 binaries:

  1. Select the Windows ZIP button for your PC’s architecture.
  2. Save the zip file to your PC.
  3. Unzip the zip file.
  4. Run Chordious.WPF.exe to launch Chordious.

Note: This version saves your work in a file named Chordious.User.xml in the same directory as Chordious.WPF.exe, so don’t delete that file.

It’s recommended that you keep the automatic updating enabled to be notified when new versions are released. To update, simply overwrite Chordious.WPF.exe with the newer version.

Unpacked ZIP (Requires .NET 6 Runtime)

The unpacked zip release provides loose, framework-dependent .NET 6 binaries.

  1. Install the latest .NET 6 Runtime
  2. Select the Unpacked ZIP button above.
  3. Save the zip file to your PC.
  4. Unzip the zip file.
  5. Run Chordious.WPF.exe to launch Chordious.

FAQ

Will updating to a newer version keep my existing configuration?

Yes. Newer versions of Chordious WPF are guaranteed to support loading older configuration files. However the reverse is not true. If for some reason you need to load a config file in an older version of Chordious, there’s no guarantee that it will work.

Why isn’t Chordious WPF available for Windows XP or Vista?

Unfortunately Windows XP and Vista don’t support .NET 6 (for Chordious 2.6) or .NET 4.6.2 (for Chordious 2.0-2.2).

Why isn’t Chordious WPF available for Mac OS X or Linux?

Developing in Windows, the quickest path to success was to build Chordious targeting Windows first. I do plan on eventually releasing the next major version of Chordious on other platforms, including Mac OS X and Linux.

Can I backup my config? Can I move my work to another computer?

Yes, you can export (and later import) your config (diagram library, custom instruments / tunings / qualities / scales, etc.) by going to the Config tab in the Options window and using “Export Config” and “Import Config”.

Can I migrate my work from Classic Chordious into Chordious WPF?

Yes, if you have old Classic Chordious “ChordLine” files, you can import them into Chordious WPF by going to the Config tab in the Options window.

I’ve gotten a message that my configuration is corrupt. What can I do?

Send me a copy of your configuration file and I’ll take a look at it.

In the MSI version, the configuration is called Chordious.User.xml (or Chordious.WPF.xml in some older versions) and is located under %USERPROFILE%\AppData\Roaming\Chordious\.

In the ZIP version, your configuration file should be located in the same folder as the Chordious executable.

Note: If you see multiple XML files please send them all. When Chordious detects a corrupt config, you will be given the option to reset your config and continue. Chordious will then save a backup of your config, which is why you’re seeing multiple files.
